What Is a Breakaway ID Lanyard?

A breakaway ID lanyard includes a release buckle positioned along the neck strap. The buckle is designed to separate when the lanyard is pulled with sufficient force, helping reduce the risk of the strap remaining caught around the wearer’s neck.

Many breakaway buckles can be reconnected after opening, allowing the lanyard to be used again.

This feature is particularly useful in environments where a standard closed-loop lanyard could become caught on surrounding objects. Nobody expects a lanyard to catch on a door handle or storage rack, of course. The breakaway buckle is included for the moment nobody expected.

A breakaway lanyard should not be confused with a fall-arrest lanyard, climbing lanyard or industrial safety harness. This product is designed for carrying identification cards and lightweight accessories. It is not fall-protection equipment or personal protective equipment.

How Does the Breakaway Buckle Work?

During normal use, the breakaway buckle keeps the two sections of the neck strap connected. When sufficient tension is applied, the buckle opens and releases the strap.
